Limited Edition Foods in 2007: Limited Edition Liquor

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

It’s never too late to look back at where you have been, especially when you are trying to map out where you are going.  Before we delve into the hot new limited edition trends that are on the way in 2008, let’s take a look back at some of the limited edition liquor that was released during 2007.

Absolut New Orleans

Among the most intriguing limited edition liquor products of 2007 was Absolut Vodka’s Absolut New Orleans, a mango and pepper flavored spirit that helped support the rebuilding of that famous town.  There was also a limited edition beverage that reportedly tasted like alcoholic maple syrup and made an excellent edition to a Sunday brunch of a remarkable ham glaze.

Wild Turkey toasted the American Spirit, while Canadian Club celebrated the American spirit of innovation with a salute to bootlegging.

There were also plenty of limited edition and seasonal beers in 2007, including Dogfish Head’s Burton Baton, the decadent Sam Adams Utopias, and too many pumpkin beers and holiday blends to mention.

2008 has barely begun, but the seasonal and limited edition beverages we will be sipping are already being brewed and created.  Here’s to toasting more limited editions with you in the year to come!

Limited Edition Foods in 2007: Limited Edition Chocolate

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

It’s never too late to look back at where you have been, especially when you are trying to map out where you are going.  Before we delve into the hot new limited edition trends that are on the way in 2008, let’s take a look back at some of the limited edition chocolate we got to indulge in during 2007.

Reese's limited edition elvis cup banana creme

One of the most highly anticipated, and unique, limited edition foods this year is the one that is featured in the banner for this blog: the limited edition Reese’s cup that celebrated Elvis, featuring banana creme in honor of The King’s treasured peanut butter and banana sandwiches.  Whether you liked bananas or not, these unique treats were unforgettable.

There were other interesting limited edition chocolates in 2007 as well, including expensive hand numbered chocolates and less expensive but equally exciting candy bars such as the limited edition Twix Java.  Word from the candy expos is that we can expect even more exciting limited edition chocolate in 2008, and I look forward to writing about it for you.

Limited Edition Foods in 2007: Limited Edition Ice Cream

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

It’s never too late to look back at where you have been, especially when you are trying to map out where you are going.  Before we delve into the hot new limited edition trends that are on the way in 2008, let’s take a look back at some of the limited edition ice creams we got to indulge in during 2007.

Of all of the food categories that are covered on this blog, the limited edition ice creams seem to be the most consistently popular.  Ice cream is always a treat, and limited edition ice creams seem to fascinate folks of all ages.

We saw some great flavors in 2007, including TastyKake Peanut Butter KandyKake from Turkey Hill, Haagan-Dazs amazing Caramelized Pear and Toasted Pecan, Yarnell’s Pink Promise Berry Sorbet, and of course the Snyder’s of Hanover Chocolate Pretzel flavor that won rave reviews.

Newcastle Brown Ale flavored ice cream Doddington Dairy

We also saw some interesting ideas, like Edy’s limited edition Root Beer flavor from last summer and the Duff’n D’oh-Nuts ice cream that featured chocolate covered doughnuts in beer flavored ice cream.  The latter, thankfully, was only available for one day as part of The Simpsons Movie publicity blitz.  For a much more palatable version of beer flavored ice cream, check out Doddington’s limited edition version flavored like Newcastle Brown Ale (if you still can).

There were also several sports-themed flavors, such as Funnycide Pride or the football obsessed Eagles and Bengals themed ice creams.

And of course the year would not have been complete without the seasonal classics, like the Peppermint ice cream which apparently makes an excellent cocktail.

I am already looking forward to covering, and enjoying, many more interesting limited edition ice creams in 2008.

Limited Edition Foods in 2007: Limited Edition Snacks

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

It’s never too late to look back at where you have been, especially when you are trying to map out where you are going.  Before we delve into the hot new limited edition trends that are on the way in 2008, let’s take a look back at some of the limited edition snacks that intrigued our taste buds in 2007.

M&M Razzberry Limited Edition

Snacks always seem to come in a variety of limited edition shapes, sizes, flavors and textures.  The Oreo Dunker debuted in Canada as a limited edition, for example, and M&Ms created a limited edition that had nothing to do with the chocolate the classic candies are typically known for and instead tasted like "razzberries."  We saw limited edition Strawberry Jelly Krimpets, bagels shaped like candy canes, and a plethora of other tasty treats.

Doritos offered one of the most interesting limited editions of the year, an unidentified limited edition chip that consumers got to taste and name themselves.  Ruth’s Hemp Bar also had an intriguing idea, with a Red, White & Blueberry bar that was focused on raising political awareness among the brand’s followers.

There were also plenty of movie tie ins this year, as always, including the Krusty-Os cereal that helped promote The Simpsons movie.

While not technically a snack, California Pizza Kitchen’s limited edition Cajun Pizza was one of the most popular foods of the year if the traffic it brought to this blog is any indication at all.  The post about this unique food was one of the most popular on the site for months after it went up, and the food itself was pretty popular as well.  If you did not have a chance to try it when it was in the frozen food section you will have to head to a CPK restaurant, where the Cajun Pizza is a menu staple.

Whether salty or sweet, I am looking forward to covering more limited edition snacks for you in 2008.

Limited Edition Foods in 2007: Limited Edition Sodas and Energy Drinks

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

It’s never too late to look back at where you have been, especially when you are trying to map out where you are going.  Before we delve into the hot new limited edition trends that are on the way in 2008, let’s take a look back at some of the limited edition sodas and limited edition energy drinks we got to taste in during 2007.

The Pepsi Ice Cucumber took Japan by storm early last summer, where it sold out in less than two weeks, and Diet Dr. Pepper created some excitement in the U.S. in December with its limited edition Chocolate Cherry Diet Dr. Pepper.  Meanwhile Jones Soda never failed to disappoint with its seasonal limited editions such as the Halloween and holiday sodas, or occasional surprises such as a soda that tastes like dirt.

Jeff Gordon Limited Edition 24 Energy Drink

Energy drinks saw more and more celebrity endorsements, such as the Jeff Gordon limited edition that came out last summer, and the autographed cans that Red Bull put in the market place in the fall.  The most revered limited edition energy drink of the year, however, was connected with a fictional celebrity known as The Master Chief and a little game called Halo 3.  Mountain Dew’s limited edition Game Fuel did not taste that great, but it had so much caffeine it gave people headaches … just the thing that their target market likes to hear.

So thanks for all the memories, and the sugar, 2007 … and here’s to more limited edition drinks in 2008.
